the origami of five heart(beats), it is

I.
an onion peel
lashing the eyes
brining old wounds
at every heartless note
left behind

II.
a bay leaf
spicing the chicken dish
with (he)artful ardor
on a dreary winter night

III.
a red paper
light as dragonfly wings
with deep pockets
to keep and count
pebbles, seeds, nuts, heart-
struck kisses-

IV.
under the tree
red-breasted birds sing
their hearts clovering the field-
an open invitation

V.
words twining with eclipses
spaces with liquid memory
punctuating against white canvas-
the heart of me

  1. I so admire the progression of each image from dark to light. A great use of the blackbird way of seeing thing

  5. All five are winners--you rocked the prompt & warmed my heart, My poem was vintage Me--dark & long(ish). Your third one resonates the most with me today.

  7. The title is a stunner, Grace, and all five stanzas are wonderful, together and individually.
In the first I am particularly taken with 'brining the old wounds'. The second one piques my senses of taste and smell and I admire the play on '(he)artful'.
Number four is special as a robin found its way into the open bathroom window today and I had to save it from one of our cats.
    I just love number five!

  13. I love the idea of each of these as an origami--a piece of art made out of the simplest of things really--a piece of paper--each of these feels complete and of a piece--

    By far my fave:
    a red paper
    light as dragonfly wings
    with deep pockets
    to keep and count
    pebbles, seeds, nuts, heart-
    struck kisses-

  18. Oh, how I love this, Grace. I love the way each is an art of itself, and the all fold together beautifully. The last stanza especially wrapped around my heart.

Words, a portent media to capture the imagination that intrudes into man's life!

  21. Each piece stands alone and, yet, compliments the next ... and so on. A lovely cascade of verse. Images and abstracts are woven together beautifully creating a wonderful synergy.
