Spell

Distance is you
fevered under the linen of snow

Breathing blue, weighed
by stiff white crystals

Hemmed by dark
feathers & stones

Under the dead
rib, I whisper urgently

to your curled ear:
Never forget-

Be a savage fern!
Be the wild blooming sage!

  1. I love this... the whispering to a fern, and I think of the way they will uncurl once spring is here...

all those dried up leaves, frostbit plant curled over....awaiting spring to uncurl and unfurl. Love this!

  21. Lovely. There are so many ferns here in NZ and watching them uncurl is fascinating so I think this is well written.

  22. Good advice. Never forget, not the generations of the past or the promises of the future. I wonder what revenge the snow will extract on us here not so very far from you Grace. tonight it is near 40 and raining.

Methinks the snow will catch us, pile all on at once burying not only the ferns but the tree trunks, stoops and door lintels. Alas I still say bring it.
