The sound of the ice cream cart rings a colorful music in the streets. Children scramble like busy bees to check the flavours of the ice cream and fancy toppings. I try green ice cream served thick between a fresh bun, instead of a cone. Soon, my siblings and I will watch a movie and then go to the ice cream house for a banana split.
Summer is sweet with ice cream in different tropical colors - purple yam, red bean, mango, avocado, coconut, lychee and green tea. With halo-halo as the ultimate dessert, I scoop each milk-flavored shaved ice with gusto. Sweet bananas with tapioca pearls and leche flan (egg custard) are my favorites. I love the icy sweetness in my mouth. Beats the heat every time.

Sure many a way to beat the heat with a summer treat.
ReplyDelete3rd try at a comment; smile. With the rise of the heat index, we all scream for ice cream, but my diet tempers my cravings
ReplyDeleteOh my....and I just gobbled down some cold icecream for lunch...right from the container! Now I don't feel so guilty for indulging :)
ReplyDeleteThe haiku here is beautiful!
I don't believe it! You've included an ice cream cart and I have an ice cream van in mine! Summer sounds :)
ReplyDeleteI love the colours and the halo-halos sound wonderful, cool queen!
Quintessential summer vibes Grace.Ice Cream for the win.
ReplyDeleteLove your summer memories... ice-cream is always a treat, but this sounds so much better. No heat to get that craving here yet.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea you could get those flavours...it brought the sounds to life beautifully.
ReplyDeleteI loved ice cream also as a child and I remember taking the children to various places for these treats. Nice memories of summer, and you can eat ice cream all year round.
ReplyDeleteRoses in Summer, their sweet scent fills the air.
ReplyDeleteI have to admit as soon as I finish this comment I'm going to the freezer for an ice cream bar! I enjoyed your summer memories!
ReplyDeleteI love the sound and colours of the flavours. Exotic as the heat.
ReplyDeleteLoved "Cool Queen" at the end!
ReplyDeleteSo descriptive - I gained 10 pounds just imagining! Key Lime is my favorite.
ReplyDeleteThat halo-halo looks and sounds amazing! I am jealous because of these flavors I will never have. Waaah!
ReplyDeleteAhh the memories. Thank you so much.
ReplyDeleteVery tasty haibun. Sounds deslish!
ReplyDeleteThis is a very sweet haibun Grace and cool and delicious. Ha we're now enjoying mango and lychee. Love your haiku with the summer scent sounding a little different from the summer in the prose lines :)
ReplyDeletesomething cool and sweet makes me think of sunshine immediately. I love the different types of ice cream and treats you can get where you are, yum! here we like to have Japanese or Korean cool deserts, they are very refreshing. and the ice cream cart making colorful music in the streets! that made me imagine musical notes calling out in technicolor, lovely words Grace.
ReplyDeleteI love the sweet treats of summer.....I would love to make halo-halo for my daughter-in-law one time........
ReplyDeleteYour opening line sets the nostalgic scene perfectly. I have that delicious nostalgic feeling as I read as well. It reminds me of my childhood ice cream memories -when chocolate dipped cones were the 'new' thing and we went and tried them. Although halo-halo sounds so yummy! Great work, Grace!
ReplyDeleteOh how I savored the Filipino/Asian ice cream flavors. The avocado and green tea are long time favorites. A friend makes an ice cream with sweetened condensed milk and fresh coconut and coconut milk with some lime. It is to die for. And leche flan....oh.my.goodness.
ReplyDeleteLove the sounds and flavors in your haibun, and that closing haiku. Beautiful.
ReplyDeletecool queen of the haibun indeed
ReplyDeleteThat ice cream truck bell rang for a lot of us back when ;)
ReplyDeleteSome flavors I've never tried or even seen! Thank you, Grace.
Ah, you reminded me of the sorbetero and ice candy and ice buko, all very popular during summers back home. I would scrounge for coins around the house to get these treats. It was also the time when we made a lot of ice candy and stocked them in the freezer. And of course, the halo-halo stands in every street corner - quite a profitable summer enterprise for some. :-)
ReplyDelete~ Imelda
Lovely reflection--and I can taste that ice cream. :)
ReplyDeleteHalo-halo sounds like heaven to me. And all the flavors that can become ice cream. The haiku is so good. Thanks for the fun prompt.
ReplyDeleteok, now I want some. so well drawn ~
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed all the exotic notes that you hit with this familiar treat. Very cool!
