Haibun: Summer

The sound of the ice cream cart rings a colorful music in the streets.  Children scramble like busy bees to check the flavours of the ice cream and fancy toppings.  I try green ice cream served thick between a fresh bun, instead of a cone.   Soon, my siblings and I will watch a movie and then go to the ice cream house for a banana split.

Summer is sweet with ice cream in different tropical colors - purple yam, red bean, mango, avocado, coconut, lychee and green tea. With halo-halo as the ultimate dessert, I scoop each milk-flavored shaved ice with gusto. Sweet bananas with tapioca pearls and leche flan (egg custard) are my favorites.  I love the icy sweetness in my mouth. Beats the heat every time.

  2. 3rd try at a comment; smile. With the rise of the heat index, we all scream for ice cream, but my diet tempers my cravings

  8. I loved ice cream also as a child and I remember taking the children to various places for these treats. Nice memories of summer, and you can eat ice cream all year round.

  19. Your opening line sets the nostalgic scene perfectly. I have that delicious nostalgic feeling as I read as well. It reminds me of my childhood ice cream memories -when chocolate dipped cones were the 'new' thing and we went and tried them. Although halo-halo sounds so yummy! Great work, Grace!

  20. Oh how I savored the Filipino/Asian ice cream flavors. The avocado and green tea are long time favorites. A friend makes an ice cream with sweetened condensed milk and fresh coconut and coconut milk with some lime. It is to die for. And leche flan....oh.my.goodness.

  24. Ah, you reminded me of the sorbetero and ice candy and ice buko, all very popular during summers back home. I would scrounge for coins around the house to get these treats. It was also the time when we made a lot of ice candy and stocked them in the freezer. And of course, the halo-halo stands in every street corner - quite a profitable summer enterprise for some. :-)
