Spin cycle: Spring

I fluff & fold away

winter blankets & thick socks

And put to wash my clothes

on cold water spin cycle

The sun spreads marmalade

hues on garden of budding greens

On the clotheslines

I hang

flowering apostrophes & metaphors

and pin the conjugated verbs

with brown clips

I flick away

the dewdrops of commas

stuck on my shirts

& shake out the dirt

of hypenated syllabic words

hiding in my coat pockets

Later on, I will

pluck them & toss them all in the

laundry basket

unsorted & missing pairs & sun wrinkled

smell of maple syrup

in the spring air

  1. This is gorgeously worded, Grace! I am especially blown away by; "I flick away the dewdrops of commas stuck on my shirts & shake out the dirt of hypenated syllabic words
    hiding in my coat pockets."💝💝

  2. Oh I love the washing up of those winter clothes, how marvelous it must be to come away with all those shining syllables and show it to the marmalade sky

  3. I quite enjoy the annual spring clean, the washing and storing of winter clothes and blankets, and the retrieval of lighter items, all ready for the sun to spread ‘marmalade hues on garden of budding greens’. I love how your poem shifts to words and punctuation pegged to the washing line and then tossed in the basket – laundering poetry!

  4. OH! The spill of these words takes my breath away, Grace:
    "I hang

    flowering apostrophes & metaphors

    and pin the conjugated verbs

    with brown clips

    I flick away

    the dewdrops of commas"

    SO good.

  5. There is a lovely freshness to clothes hung on the line that you can't get by throwing them into the dryer. I like the way you likened laundry to words.

  6. This is the kind of laundry even I could enjoy! All those poetic devices, arrayed to perfection in the spring sunshine :-)

  8. A standing ovation for this one, so cleverly spinning and shaking the tools of the poet. Well done!

  14. I don't even know where to start with this--a new take on spring, on the writing process, and on the universal in the mundane. Brilliant.

  18. I like your metaphors mixed in with your laundry. Seems like writing poetry and editing is like doing the laundry, getting the lines clean an sharp and washing out the extras.
