Jar

Here on shelf
jar filled with small things

-mismatched, chipped, forgotten-

Against the light
I imagine threads pulling these small
things together, like bracelet or fishing line

-lost, no more-

Sometimes, I'm them
jarring against confined glass
until I find

-fishhook, net of voices-

  1. Love that last line, especially, Grace. And the way this strings along, like a collection of broken things, caught.

  2. We're all getting strung along, Grace. You illustrated it well and the hook that waits at the end

  4. Yes, strung with mismatched people or things around us, or even dreams. That's a life quite a few relate to perhaps.

  5. Oh, that ending (and the way you built to it) gave me shivers of delight.

  6. This is an intriguing analogy - AND I enjoy becoming familiar with various poetry terms such as Quadrille.

  7. Oh that hope of putting it all together... It never leaves us, does it?

  8. Beautiful imagery - I recognise the feeling, Grace.

  9. Odd how nothing, no matter how long it is stored ever loses its voice or meaning. And everything stored seems to be a part of a chain already, stringed or not.

  10. My jars are stored away too ... filled with summer garden 2016 memories ... smiles ... Love, cat.

  12. This is such an interesting write to me....I'm reminded of the old Skippy jars my dad kept in his workshops -- some had only one kind of screw, or a certain size nail -- but there were others that held a mishmash -- the pieces that didn't fit, the extras. And then the shift to equate the writer with the jar.......and the threads pulling these things together like the often mismatched but happending deeds and occurences of life. Would that these pieces are pulled together by a net of voices -- which I see as friendly -- rather than the fish hook which I see as painful.
    A thought provoking write!

  16. Lillian's remark reminds me of my dad's workshop as well and how he kept things in jars. This reminds me of his mishmash jar he would tip out at times and finger through and he always found that odd thing he needed.

  17. I think of the many random pieces of ourselves disconnected but yet united. Lovely!

  18. Your imagery in this is wonderful - how to tie an apparently random selection of items together. Beautiful and magical.

  19. Wonderful, especially your last line. Thank you for this

  20. I have a jar filled with forgotten things, perhaps it is that button or seashell or small stone with no place to go, a paperclip with nothing to clip but empty thoughts. My mind went so many places with this one Grace.

  21. Perhaps we search for things outside of that enclosed space but still end up on a line of some sort. very nice.

  22. Interesting parallel in your poem, Grace...and the perfect photo!

  23. Love your metaphor for the longing to be connected.

    ReplyDelete
  24. That urge to connect is strong...perhaps even among "things" left in jars?

  25. Sometimes it's the string and even the fishhook that kind of keeps the continuity in our lives. Otherwise, it's easy to get lost in a jar ( with other mismatches).

  26. love you mentioning this. sometimes i feel as if i'm one of those collected pieces in a jar, juxtaposed in the realm of my existence, through time and space, just thrown into the 'jar of life' to try to find my connection or if someone will tether me by a string along with all else in the jar.

    well written mi amiga !

  27. Good to have a jar to keep those assorted mismatched things! Everything (and everyone) needs a place!

  28. We are all such vessels to hold our life's minutia, Grace! Mismatched as we are, a truly beautiful mosaic!
