A sign, maybe

Maybe it is the sign of spring
When I see a pair of geese honking
Above the trees, a trumpet heralding a new morning

Maybe they bring tidings from the south,
Grains from river, sticks from orange trees,
The colors of the sun, bursting like pink tulips

Maybe they hear waves turning under the full moon,
Unmistakable beat of a primal dance, lost to me in my city shoes-
Beautiful as an infant’s cry, thrilling a mother’s heart

As white wings soar, remembering the path-
Their faith, steadfast in the unpredictable skylight-
Where heading for home, a beginning-

Posted for D'verse Poets Pub - OpenLinkNight -  While going to work, I saw a pair of geese flying overhead our office.   There is a group of them that comes back every year, and the females would nest on the same spot, the plant box at the back parking lot.  Well, let's hope spring is just around the corner.

  1. I hope you're right and that this is a sogn of spring - as there's snow on the ground here in KY today :)

    Beautifully written as always.

  2. ah maybe you have it...maybe they bring with them the warmth...maybe they have more promise than the groundhog did...ha...i think often the animals know more than us...more attuned to nature and the world...

  3. I'll hold you to that, as the warmth is wanted at my mat of course not too warm though, need balance but anything beats snow.

  5. If you are feeling anything like me, I'll even take a car honking a sign of spring! Gee I just can't believe it's still winter in most places when we should be having spring! I noticed every now and then more birds gathering in song, and then another snow storm hits and they are gone. I wonder where do they go in times like that?

  6. Beautiful, Grace. The geese pass overhead here on their migrations. Seeing them heading north is usually a sign that spring is coming - this year it has just got colder since I first saw them. Mind you, I'm just back in form a walk and while the wind is really bitter, there is spring-like warmth in the sunshine when you can get out of the wind. Perhaps spring is coming after all.

  9. we have a saying in germany: one swallow doesn't make a summer but i so hope that those geese make a spring...can't wait to put my shoes off again and hear this tribal beat...

  11. beautiful poem, reminds me of my years on the prairies where the first sight of Canada geese really did herald spring... here on the west coast, though, we have them all year round (but i still love to see those v's against the evening sky)

  12. "Maybe" gives the whole piece a wondering feel. Just so beautiful... Adore this poem and admire the way you link yourself in to it by the reference to the city shoes. Nice.

  14. Oh, yes, we have had great flocks of snow geese here recently, and they give me such hope that spring will, eventually, arrive. Really lovely imagery in this.

  15. Those Canada geese are heading back to the tar sands land. Each year there are fewer migrating butterflies coming up from Mexico to California. I wonder how the geese are faring in global climate collapse. What will find when they arrive home and everything is changed?

  24. Lovely (there is that word again)poetry, Grace; the geese arriving here now in the PNW..their population not as romantic if you happen to live on a creek where they tend to leave their business on the lawn, but I still love the wildness and beauty of them ;)

  30. Migrating birds are such a powerful metaphor. Liked these lines especially

Maybe they hear waves turning under the full moon,
Unmistakable beat of a primal dance, lost to me in my city shoes-
Beautiful as an infant’s cry, thrilling a mother’s heart

a reminder to take off our city shoes now and then..
