when we move

the beat goes off center &

        dives into an exquisite fusion-

high&low, crash&burn as if

time is one long meandering s-e-c-o-n-d

slowly the hardness in our eyes

& troubled words fall on floor

smoke dissolves us

green & light instead of black & weary fighters

we listen as the man grooves his heart

& guts in his music, our sky retracts

as we find our pulse,

     verses bare with excitement

flexes then another Ripple

     moves us like water  filled

with eXpectancy

optimism tears our chest, now a forest

we forget our scars

battles that broke our wings, instead

we run, RuN aWay

     as if nOthing needs mending

                                                          nothing

Inside//Outside my Head

This poem lives outside my head
It strikes at the edges & wallows
in unfinished business, cusps &
in between, backspaces & deleted words

It enjoys rowdy street crowds
and music blaring from the young man
tapping his fingers on keyboards as if
he's in a concert instead of subway stop

Sometimes it jogs early morning alone
in the beach or park, lost in its verses
unmindful of time, who comes nosing close
like an eager puppy waiting for a treat

Some nights, it sips margarita & refuses
to rhyme, preferring to tango & sway to
hot salsa music & restless feet, until
shoes & restraint are forgotten in the mix

It collects broken & forgotten things
as if they are treasures instead of junk
During winter, it presses its cheeks
against my shivering bones, croaking
'Here's the kerosene, light that fire!'

Winter morning

Grace@Everyday Amazing

Red
blooms trapped in ice
Brown
leaves stilled in teardrops
Blue
berries cocooned in crystals
Green
pines buried under snow bed

White
trumps all the colors, tapering
morning
ghostly pale than bloodless sky

Resolutions

Chain by chain
block by block
there's light underfoot
& above
& sideways

Seeping into each crack
as rain
as canvas, clean & startling
as dawn, awakening trees after
ice storm with a gentle brush of yellow
along its bent brittle limbs

Weave and weave
knot and knot
gather, refract, pour, mirror, cast
light
even hidden from your eyes
each wave & particle, a seed
resilient &
beautiful as you

May your 2014 be full of light !!!

Silver

Late afternoon sun
breaks through the grey.

Bare trees coated in ice sparkle like stars.

Luminous crystals.  Shower of diamond glass.

Silver trees.       Silver branches.       Silver salt.

Soon the moon will  dawn its  silvery light.

The landscape is drowning in silver tears.

Or maybe its my eyes watering from

seeing you for the
first time.

Christmas after the ice storm

Picture by good friend, Fred Villacorta

Under canopy
Icicles drip from bare trees
Slowly like tear drops

Snow falling like rain
Drenches red bows & pine cones-
Ice sugar on cake

Winter tanka

Outside my window
smoky clouds veil the full moon
        to fading star light
but snow falls whitening ground
        to a thousand lit candles

~0~0~

A truck rattles by
salting the road wrapped in frost
        Above window's edge
        crystals drip slow thin daggers
Morning melts like ice cream cone

~0~0~

Houses are skull capped
with thin ice crystals
Trees twist under bed of snow
    Morning paints everything white
but for dead leaves, amber framed -

A tribute to Nelson Mandela

Do not stand by my grave & grieve
I'm not here, wrapped in leopard skin
I am where the wind blows cruelest
So my words will scatter like grains

Ripening land of corn & fruits
Do not stand by my grave & grieve
I'm not here, draped in flag honors
I am where the night reigns darkest

Burning candles beacon for peace
After slaughtering the ox, feast
Do not stand by my grave & grieve
I'm not here, blessed in holy water

I am where sky blues grass field
And sun browns our faces with joy
Sing & dance in celebration
Do not stand by my grave & grieve

Beloved Father of Freedom,
We bid you Farewell Madiba!

Light the candles

Grace @ Everyday Amazing

Amidst darkening sky
Cold wind cracks a whip
Rousing black birds to flee
Fluted ash, billowing wings-
Arc of silver from street lights

~0~0~

Snow dust spinning threads
white on white, soft as feathers-
inside, we wax stories:  old, new
beside brick chimney
  fire settles in our bellies

~0~0~

Early morning mass
I listen to choir in red bows
Incense fills the air
Your words are my candle
Banishing winter darkness
