joys of spring

she swivels and turns, 

mother's gem 

Commentary:   I was specially touched by Tarun's haiku for me ~ Thank you

Calm like a mother

you taught me this enchanting art

my haiku mother.

(I dedicate this haiku to you Grace for you have taught me and at times corrected my haiku. I have never seen you but I know that we have a heart-to-heart bond like a mother and son.)

The eye

white computer screen 
trains eye to spot the box edges, 
grey walls with polite glances and gestures


summer sun invites, glitters office window
a co-worker said she walked outside for a break
beautiful day to catch blue butterflies and goldfish


it could have been winter
mind on the cube full of files and sheets,  
details today, breakfast meeting tomorrow


black cane in hand, he proudly smiles 
as he wraps himself back to work like a busy bee, 
regained health now precious as a white diamond


i search while driving the busy freeway, moody as a crab,
ignoring thirst for cold yogurt and freshly buttered croissants,      
mind wanders on foot, overtaking huge trailer trucks  


full of merchandise, sales goals, expectations, hellos 
and goodbyes to busy people revolving the office doors, 
while my eye follows a seagull soaring above the orange lit sky 


gliding over the creek, a flash of silver plume in forest wild, 
     
it is a beautiful day

Don't

                                                      

it is much more than just 

hurtful words

spiteful taunts

aggressive actions 

bullying

can 

maim self esteem

destroy self confidence
strangling faith with a rope 

k i l l 

Say NO to Bullying !

Commentary:  I like that the Catholic grade school of my daughter is taking time out to teach the children about bullying and how to handle it.   They even provided a telephone help line to talk and report such bullying incidents.   My daughter has been intimated by an older female student before but she showed her claws in one encounter, so now they largely ignore each other.  My older son had fought a bully in the school ground, with a crowd watching, when he was young.   After this incident, he was never bullied again.   Is this the way to handle bullies?   I don't know but as a parent, I always tell my children to let us know if they have problems with anyone and to discuss it with us.

Rain

under leaf

frog hides from the rain,

falling bricks

the garden

awaits pouring rain,

empty cup

tiny frog 

jumps into the pond,   

dry of rain

Creek

the creek baits this spring morning
its gentle water rippling the cracked stones,
unbroken only by gulls catching the sun rays


I sit on the large boulder, casting out my fishing tackle
for school of fish, a broken twig or maybe a maple leaf
drifting above the overgrown moss, wild and untouched 


words crawl out from under pebbles, behind the forest trees, 
squirming past the squirrels, bounding after a woodpecker,
running the wooden trail, until they sink in my lap, drowsy


life is everywhere, not just a benefit in my office file, 
health is precious, not just a number I add up in my analysis sheet,
family means bonding, not a cause for declining a small case  


I angle my face to the calm wind,  flowing water    
standing, I throw my catch back into the sleeping creek,
cutting net, I know they will find me when I need them

Pine

lush forest

brimming black verses, 

pining heart

pines in the forest

flaming red in misty wild,

ink of my black pen

pine for the blue sky

white geese flying to the sun,

new page in my book

Forgotten meal

                                                                          The Meal, 1891, by Paul Gauguin

She places her half eaten guava on the table 
with a knife, she starts to slice the bananas, 
into the bowl of sweetened coconut milk, 
when she hears the music booming in the streets   


Putting down her apron, she stands up to peer
through the gates, where drums and dancers beat to the hot sun   
Banners and stilts proclaim the festival of the mother moon


Running to her closet, she unwraps the headdress and red clothes 
In the mirror, she sees a butterfly, gliding and swaying in the air  
With a smile, she goes out into the crowd, clapping her hands 


Twirling her arms to the rhythmic beat of native song,
She forgets the meal, the strings of duties that engulf her day
Specially on this day

mask of fear   

cold as biting ice,   

stills the lips

Tea cup

light reflects table

wired by laptops, phones, music

cyberspace, twitterverse news sweep

the room in tidal waves

but for this corner

where

inside tea cup of

cherry and plum blooms,

hums a monk’s prayer

dwells a river

flowing with the wind  

pulsing with questions

with answers

can move turtle slow,
