With my thick mittens & woollen socks,
I settle to read your letters, warm
as redbush tea, toasted sweet corn bread
You bring spark, skylight, sugar bush smells
Gloomy rain clouds blur in festive hues
I become playful child, curious as snail
and I thank you, this morning* (again)

ReplyDeleteI tried commenting earlier, but it didn't go through (a problem on my end, I think). Anyway, coming back to this amazing piece, I think it's an intimate, evocative account of what letters can do to people. It's an act so intimate when we read each word and you can see the penmanship--maybe some words crossed out or erased; the fold in the paper, the scent that lingers once out of the envelope; it's such a fun feeling, especially when getting into the mindset to start reading them. Beautifully, beautifully written, Grace! Hope you have a happy holiday and new year. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a cozy place to read personal words of greeting! I like the idea that snails are curious :)
