Word play

I forget them sometimes - their lilt and grace when arranged and folded like origami on the page. How soft and musical they can be.   How flexible they can bend, like an accordion.  How wide their palette, from demure white to fury red to intoxicating purple-lilac.  When used with brash and swagger, they can hurt with impunity.  On the flip side, silence is also a weapon.   Imagine when your muse leaves you with an empty vase or you get no response to a letter you sent.  They say your words define you.  So be careful of the words that you invite in - they will rage in your blood, and bleed from your pen.

  2. i am in agreement with she - "they will rage in your blood, and bleed from your pen" is a fierce line and savagely illustrates the power words hold. i love the passion in this.

  3. Words like origami - multiple folded meaning - what a wonderful concept. And then those words of warning (and the idea of 'inviting' words in)... Having just had a bit of a 'bish-bosh' of words with my older son tonight, and feeling so bad about it afterwards, wishing I could have sucked those words back into my mouth - so I can fully relate!

  6. Beautiful! I agree, our words do tend to define us.. mind and soul :D

  7. I have to say that when the word just pours there is something so liquid... like blood, or ink.. and there are days when they just pour forth without trouble and when they are ached one syllable at a time. I love the haibun.

  8. I love the idea of words raging in the blood. The look so alive, and whatever comes out of our pen will be kicking. We must be careful, indeed...

  9. I love this Haibun. One of my favourite forms. You are so right about the power of words "how flexible they can bend, like an accordion" I like those words.

  11. Excellent poem.

    My favorite lines by you:

How wide their palette, from demure white to fury red to intoxicating purple-lilac.

Perfect and rich texture of words and imagery.

    Awesome! :)

  12. You made the ending Dawn's sugary rise, how beautifully epicurean of you ... lush with bits of a glass for those not paying attention to their color wheel ...

  18. This is both beautiful and packed with wisdom. Words are such a gift in expression such a wide range of emotions and thoughts. They can be healing and they can destroy. The haiku is exquisite...the colors.

  22. Words or the lack of words are indeed powerful. We must pick them carefully just like the colors used to paint on a canvas...words are art ...

  23. "So be careful of the words that you invite in - they will rage in your blood, and bleed from your pen. " Such a powerful admonition - a warning. Words like origami -- and we can fold, unfold, and fold again. Oh the power of words. The color, the swagger, the sweet dawn. Ah your words...

  24. Origami folds & metaphoric mysteries, words are everything to many of us; spiritually, thought is powerless without the utterance of them, the transition to the action of language; gorgeous haiku as well.

  25. Delightful metaphor on the power of words.

  26. This haibun pierced me to the heart with its acknowledgement of the wonder of language. Having read it immediately after reading Bjorn's Aqua Regia I wondered what genius muse was around when you were each putting such beautiful words together.

  28. " So be careful of the words that you invite in - they will rage in your blood, and bleed from your pen."

To late Grace, they rage and don't bleed as much anymore but when they do come out it is a hemorrhage. I love my grandmother yet for her love of language. She bit me with her knowledge and stung me with her skills of construction.

  29. I love the extended metaphor - words and origami - and the contrast between the prose and the haiku, linked by a delicate thread of colour! :)

  30. love the haibun form-- and that last line of the prose: "they will rage in your blood, and bleed from your pen..." --indeed!

  31. "They say your words define you." Perhaps that is why it takes courage to write, because we don't like to be pinned down and defined.

  32. Yes Grace, many people have internal bleeding from words. Thanks for the reminder

  33. It is true that silence can be just as powerful...
I love the usage of color as a metaphor when describing the power of words.

  34. One can often overdo things and take them by the horns. One's writing can precede any attempts at belittling one's efforts. Wonderful haibun Grace!

  36. An exquisite write. We really do have a palette of words at our disposal that have the power to hurt or heal. Hopefully we are defined by more than our words as we often stumble on them. A cautious warning indeed.

  37. A beautiful, and very special, haibun. The prose and the haiku are lovely. The prose sets off a wonderful cascade of vibrant and evocative images that dovetail beautifully with the haiku. A splendid rendering of the form.

  39. This is hypnotic. For one reason or the other, the image that came to mind was the image of the girl in Karate Kid 3 (ha! I am dating myself) as she flipped her fan this side and that. I can even hear its the sound as it moved.
