Winter's shattered sky

first blush of snow
tinges white porcelain dust
on shriveled earth,
loud hateful words tangled with smoke-
where is south wind to lift gloom away?

~0~

night chills our bones
tired with drawn out war striking
streets to ghost towns,
winter comes with shattered sky-
where is blue moon to drown our aches?

~0~

take these broken parts
and hammer them to a canvas
with winter's fire,
your hands are a gardeners'
blooming each fragment to petaled sun-

  2. That fire is sorely needed... at least on Sunday comes advent and the season of candle-lighted nights... the grey skies weigh me down...and I like that you end with a hopeful wish... I need some flowers inside as well.

  4. Love the wintery mood in those tanka set. Lovely words: 'hands are a gardeners'
blooming each fragment to petaled sun' ~ we got first snow today

  5. Loved it Grace. Funny, it may be because I'm in the middle of working on a new song, but like I told Bjorn about his piece--it has all the makings of being made into a song. Happy Bird Day, Smiles...>KB

  10. I love this poem, especially the title and the lines within the poem where it is used. Your closing two lines end the poem to perfection, Grace.

    Human Terrorism..
    only humans

    in kind
    and courage..
    ways of just
    being
    now
    with God
    as Nature on
    their side as free
    surviving
    is tHeir goal..
    not fear
    and
    hate
    created by
    tRuly weak
    human beings..
    Apex creature.. ha..!
    Apex of hate falls
    under Nature
    rule
    of tough
    unconditional
    passionate Love
    of Survival of the whole..

  12. A tight taunt trio of tankas, also touching on the down slope of the season, that gray/grey onerous cumulus connected to the cold, snow, & fatigue from the world's events can leave us depleted, but the close is killer as a ray of hope is created out of the miasma of dread.

  13. love the "winter's fire". First two parts are so wistful/sad/bleak, but then your 3rd part brings in warmth and hope. Beautiful.

  14. Obviously a disdain for the cold months but it does wonders for the artist. Time accorded indoors to splash on the canvas is a respite a blessing in fact! Best wishes for your studies Grace!

  16. Oh...just got connected. These are so beautiful. It makes me wonder if you were a Japanese poet in a previous life. The title alone is a poem. Not sure this connection with endure but glad I got yours
