Winter tanka

Outside my window
smoky clouds veil the full moon
        to fading star light
but snow falls whitening ground
        to a thousand lit candles

~0~0~

A truck rattles by
salting the road wrapped in frost
        Above window's edge
        crystals drip slow thin daggers
Morning melts like ice cream cone

~0~0~

Houses are skull capped
with thin ice crystals
Trees twist under bed of snow
    Morning paints everything white
but for dead leaves, amber framed -

  2. Wow! Underlying the beauty of Winter is its danger--daggers, scull (caps) and death--but inside the window it lies innocent and glowing.

  4. I can quite easily believe you think in tanka form when you admire the view from your window. This present winter in all its terrible beauty.

  6. Beautiful writing, Grace. We are in for a major snowstorm tomorrow. Sigh. Our snow will be lightening ground to a thousand lit candles indeed. I am not looking forward to this one. I will be hoping the salt trucks you mentioned will be active. I wonder if I will be able to get to my grandchildren's Christmas program with such a 'bed of snow.' Sigh. Merry Christmas to you, Grace.

  29. Standalone, these are perfection. Together they are a perfect trifecta, Grace. Just beautiful. I just took some similar ice pics today. We're in the midst of an horrendous ice storm. Sad for all the trees damaged, but stunningly beautiful. Wishing you a blessed and bright Christmas, Grace, and a stunning 2014!
