may your summer morning be bright
as purple salvia, flashier than eggplant
dangling from vine, lush & lethargic
may your garden flowers bloom
with spike of ginger & tantrum of cumin
as bees hum a hot peppery buzz
<an alarm goes off>
i wake up
and there is a down-
pour,
my garden boots are
muddy greasy

Oh that contrast between the harsh reality and the dreams... but hopefully the garden gets the water it really needs
ReplyDeletelovely wishes "spike of ginger & tantrum of cumin" but even they need rain!
ReplyDeleteOh this is absolutely exquisite writing, Grace! I especially love; "spike of ginger & tantrum of cumin." 💝💝
ReplyDeleteRude awakening! All that garden glory become muck underfoot.
ReplyDeleteHa! the dose of reality comes so sudden..grey, and wet...
ReplyDeleteSubtle, smooth dissonance, juxtaposition without anger or epithets; nice work.
ReplyDeleteYour poem is clearly dissonant, especially compared to your usual poetic style. In particular, the first and second stanzas seem to contain disparate descriptions, not as harmonious as usual. Well done.
ReplyDeleteSo liked that alarm in the middle of a wishful meditation. And the broken/unexpected sounds - 'bloom with spike of ginger' Lovely stuff
ReplyDeleteHad to shake my head and smile as I read your delightful poem....just yesterday I put my poinsettia and Norfolk Island Pine on out deck ... today it hailed. Not pretty. I think they are barely salvageable.
ReplyDelete"Tantrum of cumin" is a great expression
ReplyDeletethat sudden ending of a dream...
ReplyDeleteI love these words
ReplyDeletemay your garden flowers bloom

Wonderful Grace!
the spike of ginger line was my favourite of the poem.
ReplyDeleteClever title too, Grace! On every lush garden, showers of blessing must fall :)
ReplyDeleteAfter a prolongued drought, the brief downpour yesterday was very welcome. It might not be exactly what you intended, I don't know, but the vivid colours of salvia always strike me as discordant.
ReplyDeleteThe alarm going off ... is different from an alarm that wakes us up. Good weaving of details...
