leaf broken from cider tree,
searching missing link

hands clapping to beat 

of guitar tapping, trees dance    

in flamenco skirt

morning sunlight dips

inkblot into eager hands,

turning page to leaf

To the sea

take me to the sea,  
lay me down the sands


warmed by salt marsh snails and mottled weeds,
hollowed by the restless crabs and lonely footprints    


bring me far where the white gulls fly,
bonded to craggy rocks and cliff edge


then  


wash me in plumage grey,
wash me in sun webbed rays,    


my wingtips quiver for the sky

Endurance

eyes behind thick lens,

he practiced long measured steps,

enduring silence

running briskly to

yellow line, endurance pounds 

one second harder

~0~0

there are no white flags

nor finish lines,  beginnings

draw out endurance

Monday morning

ticking of wall clock wakes me,
its rhythmic sound a reminder that 
every second, every minute is gliding by. 


alarm rings once, twice, (and thrice even)
admonishing me to follow my morning routine.   
i prepare breakfast of cold milk and wheat cereals, 
topped with blueberries and sometimes, sliced bananas.


house is quiet, this moment of peace is mine.
though the morning light is still very faint,  
i read poems and allow the words to inspire my thoughts, 
and take me into new journeys.   connected with myself,     


at 7:15 am, i grab my car keys, lunch bag and coat,
ready for my city drive 


another ordinary day, 
same road, same driving lane,
same scenery, same office destination.


i feel very blessed this monday morning.

Blue rush

waves curl in blue rush

rhythm of sea, crushed cubes in

raspberry cocktail

sky above coconut trees,  

seaweeds tangling shoe

Poetics: In 1999

white sand crunches as i walk 
deserted beach of bamboo huts
it is quiet except for crabs scuttling 
under wooden boats, painted bright  


i relish the lazy morning blue
a vacation to my birthplace, and family
reunion to honor a matriarch's 80th birthday
an opportune time to spend the last days of 1999


before the clock starts the countdown,
before the papers on my desk pile high,
before days become four seasons and cold,
before nights turn purple and restless,   


i amble along the sandbar, white and empty 
just like the coconut thatched rooms, bare
essentials, yet I have what I need:   scenic views,
dad's funny tales, mom's stories, enough to fill pages


of children's books we never got to read,
not even the millennium bugs in the narrow beds
bothered me, because the end of the world is coming, they said,
so I listen instead to the rolling waves in my sleep


soothing like the water rustling under the river slats, as
fish catch from the sea becomes our dinner or lunch, fresh 
just fire, and leaves for aroma, and tropical fruits
even the goats and dogs join in for the feast,  


like the two European bikers, with their backpacks,
eating with eager hands, while drying clothes in the sun
reaching to sample the simple joys of life in the road,
embracing the sun and wind in their travels, pulse


of the sea and land on sun-hued cheeks,   
reconnected, refresh, beginning not ending,  
  
i walk back to the wooden boat waiting for me.

Childhood

eyes of innocence

childhood curiosity, bright 

dandelion seeds

children in the streets

playing ball, tag, running free,

bells pealing laughter

Bridge

i burned a bridge a long time ago


it was made of wrinkled steel, pearl dust marble, and 
tainted silver to hold trailer trucks, coast to coast


grizzled drivers kept their eyes on the mirror, cautious
while some young guns weaved in and out of the lanes


unaware of mortality by the next curve, or pain
from a missed turn, it always happen everyday


i heard it on the radio, a collision or an accident,
or i passed by along, coldly detached, shaking my head


at my high car insurance premium bill,  price of gas, price of living 
in this city of cement, where a second or seconds too late


may mean a difference of going to my office on time, or
getting crushed by fast lane, fast food and endless lists 


of things to do, whistling car noises cut my reverie of words
rolling from my tongue, i kept trying to remember their taste 


did i give you a good-bye morning kiss, or said i love you 
yesterday or maybe the week before, i don't recall anymore  


while running after work deadlines, striving to earn points,
pacing my goals one green light at a time, i 


turn to look at my blind spots, before I switch lanes
to another bridge,  I see, I see

Fate

fate is a leaf thrown

whirling in the wind, falling 

cup of blueberries

fate is a coin tossed

heads or tail on palm, waiting  

yellow cab departs

fate is skin colour 

like orange rind, not the seeds

green watermelon
