melting snowflakes

Winter turns me into a grouch
Keeping words & sweets to myself

I scribble quickly on used paper
As if each letter holds a secret 🔑

The garden outside is a dull statue
As if a thief has stolen all the blooms

As if a baker has thrown all the flour
On table, forgetting measuring cups & left

In a huff, leaving the nuts
to squirrels and nothing for the birds 🐦

Not even his secrets
Was it fresh cinnamon stick or extra lemon

Zest & twist
That made these sweets tinglinG butterY

Warm on my hands...
Melting snowflakes, drawing  😁   😉   😤    😍    💗    💋

  1. Ooooh, I love this, Grace! Love the emojis and most especially, these four lines:
"The garden outside is a dull statue
As if a thief has stolen all the blooms

As if a baker has thrown all the flour
On table, forgetting measuring cups & left"

They describe a winter scene just perfectly! :)

  2. I do love those emojis ... what a great addition to a poem (I wonder how they are read out loud)...

the parallel between the garden state and the way it affect our minds (keeping the words to ourselves)...

  3. The final word, the drawing says it all. There was a turn in tone the more 'you' gave in to art, the catharsis to your curmudgeon. I also liked how you illustrated (pun intended) how one "as if" could turn into an unchecked series, leading you further away from Zen, the present the clearly you are able to achieve with pen in hand, so to speak.

  5. This poem speaks to me, Grace, especially the lines:
‘I scribble quickly on used paper
As if each letter holds a secret’
    and 🔑
‘Was it fresh cinnamon stick or extra lemon
    Zest & twist
That made these sweets tinglinG butterY
    Warm on my hands...

  6. The first couplet drew me in and "left in a huff, leaving the nuts to squirrels and nothing for the birds" kept me going :D

  7. What can the poem find inside bleakness & blight, what gift of winter light is sufficient? Ah those flakes ... Dunno about the emojis, there are dancing words for nothing ...

  8. I love the baker who left in a huff. LOL, I have had that happen to me a couple of times!

  9. An enchanting and lyrical ride; thanks--rife with many quotable lines, most of which have been noted by others. I come late onto the trail, having found the prompt challenging. This is now one my favorite poems of yours.

  11. Loved the metaphor of the baker throwing flour on the table unmeasured. Also all the little doo dads you added are cute!

  12. I have read this so many times. I love it, especially the super-cute emojis. :)

This makes me think of a young girl/woman losing her dad. He did the cooking/baking in the family, and now she's left behind, after he died, with incomplete recipes --- now that his hands and fun spirit aren't around to cook with/for her.

  22. I am late getting round to read. My cardiologist has me on new meds that have making me dizzy, so been difficult reading, sorry!
Grace, for me, snow is both a wonderful yet frustrating. I love to see it, DO NOT want to be in it. I can drive an hour east and be in 14 foot of snow anytime - I don't. Like your piece though... :-)
