Scents of childhood

Sap of sugar cane
Freshly cut, sun-warm

White coated cookies
crunchy with each bite

Rice cakes stirred brown with
molasses, sticky treat

Purple yam, yoked with milk
drizzled with young coconut

Goat cheese on fresh buns,
fried bananas on bamboo stick

Guavas and star apples,
cooling the afternoon heat

But always, smell of sugar
piping tropical air

Brings me back, running small
under banana trees

  1. I knew you would put those perfect images of scent... the sugar of youth.. there is something so perfect in that sap.

  2. Your post is magical and your pic looks delicious. Something I've never had. So much can trigger so many moments past.

  3. Oh, yum! How delicious - none of these are familiar to me from my childhood, but I could certainly bite into any of them now!

  4. I love these sweet smells of sweets from your childhood and the image of a small you running under banana trees. I haven't had these as a child but when the Filipino community has festivals, I have tried and enjoyed many of them. Now I can equate them with a childhood. You've opened my world.

  5. I've just eaten my dinner, and now you've made me hunger for something sweet. Such a rich cornucopia (and I adore molasses).

  8. Yummy--quite a contrast to Bjorn's outhouse poem that I just read. You've shared delicious scent-laden memories and now I want a Napoleon! Thanks for the delightful prompt.

  9. Lovely poem... It's interesting how a certain smell or sound instantly bring your mind back to the innocent time of your life.... (Hot fresh caramel popcorn does that to me.. :)

  21. What wonderful memories, wonderful work. I enjoyed being able to be transported to that time, that place in the sun with all those delectable scents.

  22. More pleasant scents, I'm sure. I wouldn't know; have no sense of smell. But these words play beautifully with each other, Grace!

  23. Vivid, but somewhat unfamiliar scents. Your poetics make my lack of familiarity insignificant. They came through in a real way.

  24. I don't have the sense to remember the scent of my childhood--other than blood, I remember bleeding a lot until I came to be 6' 250 pounds. i haven't done much bleeding since then--by then though unfortunately my olfactory pipe had been knocked scentless.
