The winter walk

Grace@ Everyday Amazing

is raw
& snapping cold -
my beige jacket becomes
an armor, keeping my hands
& body heat tight as all closed windows

Not a breeze stirs
Nor squirrels running up trees
Only silence trumpeting frost
& draping bare boughs
pristine as first breath of spring

still a long way from here -
i see the sun's golden stain
lifting the mist of night like a veil
my walk is steady beat on salted street-
one round

is all I can do
short but invigorating
like a 50 meter sprint -
my nostrils flaming smoke
before I circle back to house
eager for that warmth of chocolate cup-

  1. Walks this season of the year are definitely a challenge, Grace. And yes, the first breaths of spring are a ways off yet. But good for you for doing a short outdoor anyway. Feels good to breathe that fresh, crisp air....if only for a little while....before warming up with hot chocolate.

  3. I've said this a number of times with these 'sketches' I don't know what you could add. I like that go for it mode. Sometimes for me some of my best pieces are first drafts--well until my editor gets to see them. >KB

  5. this is raw just like the weather ... a walk in those conditions sounds so very special... here we have warm but quite wet... not quite wintery.

  6. a charcoal sketch I think. Or that French brown, black and grey crayon whose name I forget...
Is it the cold that stops you from walking further? Cuts off the breath, does it?

    1. Heavy breathing & my cheeks become stiff ~ Is the color a dull grey, maybe ~

    2. conté crayon, French crayon conté, drawing pencil named after Nicolas-Jacques Conté, the French scientist who invented it late in the 18th century.
brown, grey and black.I used to love using them.
I got a photo of them, but I don't think images can be put in comments?

  7. Makes me cold just reading it. This has been such a harsh winter (which I don't like). Anyway, I especially like this, Grace:

i see the sun's golden stain
lifting the mist of night like a veil

  20. I loved it! Reminds me of Norwegian winters, and I love Norwegian winters! I live in India now, and here the lowest temperature we get is 20 degrees Celsius. I miss Norway! Thank you for this wonderful winter poem! Felt like I was walking with you :-)

  29. Graceful detailed description.
Nothing better than a cup of hot chocolate after a walk in the snow, mmmm... delicious end.
Today it's all snowy here, in the mountains where we live, and I can share your same sensations.
Always a pleasure reading you, Grace.
