autumn musings

who braided willow’s hair and left a shoe?

a question sways beneath October’s breath.

sky flickers blue where red and gold shine through,

the sun drifts slow along the edge of death

each leaf unbuttons light the season knew

crab apple tree binds glass in morning grains

as if the sea once hummed beneath its veins.

the forest ferns hold silence in its sleeves

soft needles fold the world in tender chains

what does earth dream on, beneath fallen leaves?

October's spells

Autumn, what is my name

Autumn, what is my name

I am scatterseed, fruit of October

I am scatterseed, fruit of October

I am of Autumn's fruit, scatterseed

October, what is my name

Moon-scarred, I coax sunflower spells

Moon-scarred, I coax sunflower spells

Cleave me to light

Cleave me to light

Spells cleave me to sunflower

I coax light, moon-scarred

Darkness is a  cocoon wrapping the night

Darkness is a  cocoon wrapping the night

Making me soft as milkwitch

Making me soft as milkwitch

The night is making me soft as milkwitch

Wrapping darkness, a cocoon

Autumn spells I coax - scatterseed, moon-

scarred sunflower in October

What light cleave me, I am

Of soft fruit of darkness, I am

Making a cocoon, wrapping the night

Milkwitch is my name

at the end of road

when all flowers have withered

        black-smothered by north wind

when all leaves have fluttered

        brown-speckled to cold soil

promise me

you will still sing with gusto

        & dance with light-feet beats

keep your edges

        but remain gentle as rain

        & nourish moon-seeds of spring

rhythm of autumn

autumn, autumn, sway us away

fading yellow to the ground, moist

with rain, our leaves & blooms paler

than the waning apple-cidered moon

autumn, autumn, swirl us away

turning darker red & black purple each

passing hour, we gently accept as

our summer golden skin turn to ash

autumn, autumn swing us away

knitting our fears of change, we are

changing, from fullness to emptiness-

we collect new words for sorrow

autumn, autumn, swirl us away

into the rhythm of life & pulse of death

we succumb, grateful for blessings

from trees, warmth from dying sunlight

September sky

paint me a sky of apple green & red

as flocks of geese fly off as summer kites

the air is cooler with sun's fading light

autumn arrives, muted colors & dreads -

the harvest of pumpkins & plums is spread

on table with berrries & gourds weaved tight

on my canvas of hemp & cotton white

paint me a sky of apple green and red

i watch the rain hammer the browning beds

as maple leaves start to yellow in sight

dead flower heads begin to roll, a blight

autumn arrives, muted colors & dreads -

painting a sky of apple green & red

moody as trees, lush as pears with first bite-

autumn arrives, muted colors & dreads

Posted for dVerse Poets Pub- Poetry Form:  Villonnet. A Villonnet is a hybrid of the Villanelle and the Sonnet. It has the Iambic Pentameter of both, but holds the four-stanza/line structure of the sonnet, while utilizing the two-line rhyme nature of the villanelle. The final stanza replaces the sonnet couplet with a typical villanelle tercet.    Join us when the pub doors open at 3pm EST.

autumn wishes

Blue windspells, slivers of sunlight, apple trees

Carve us in silhouettes of geese in flight

Keeling in gratitude, with fruits, sweet & scarred

Blue windspells, slivers of sunlight, apple trees

Hold us awed by falling leaves - plum, gold & russet

Filling each grey hour with pines & yearning

Blue windspells, slivers of sunlight, apple trees

Brighten our nights, warm as butternut soup

Folding time pink as origami cranes

burning

you can turn red hot, an angry wildfire

on this autumn season

but the cool nights have prevailed

casting a soft brushed-golden light

on your skin

on your cheeks

browning

mellowing

slowing down

your pulse rate simmers to lethargic

wait

you bow to nature

early autumn

the maple leaves are changing hues-

cranberry, ochre, toffee, velvet, ember

all radiant from the cool wind-no blues

to witness the dying summer blooms

i marvel the maple leaves changing hues

exploding  from green to colors to tickle

the fancy of poets & nourish the muses

of artists.   imagine the harvest of sun-dried

fallen leaves on your hands & feet - whose

jolly idea was it to engulf you with earthly wishes-

maple trees are yielding (like myself), changing hues-

november

creeps in, a foggy morning

a blur of maple & birch

leaves are falling into heap

weaving colorful & soft bed

do you recall the burning

fires of dawn, or the time we

went bazaar shopping for cheap

clothes, munching on sugar bread

but your face is blank, warning

me that your memories are

sliding into deeper sleep-

this is something we long dread-

in overcoming mourning

you forget - life is now - leap!

Autumn

i.

the day the leaves

turn sulpher red, tangy

tangerine, gingerbread mums-

the day i fall, into you

ii.

inhale deeply

crunch, crinkle, wrinkle

before the northern wind passes

& still the fallen leaves

iii.

exhale the city smoke

& dirt from whirling machines

i wrap myself with russet blankets

and read your letters, ambered in time

iv.

birds fly as sunlight wanes

on maple trees gleaming with autumn

hues, bright as orange pumpkins

adorning our doors, with toothless grins

v.

another season to mark

from summer to autumn:   i

embrace the changes

(in) me, (in) you

Wings over the sky

i blued over your heavenly feathers

with all the tender songs

now as autumn wind

paints

sunflowers brown

green leaves to ochre

roses to crushed velvet black

and sky calls you

with aubergine & red-orange sunsets

i will linger

by the door, gathering seeds

Autumn's afternoon

sky is stirring a broth

of thunderclaps

& cumulonimbus clouds

mellowing the street lights

with muddy shade

of autumn

ground is mulched

with dead

annuals & grooved twigs

too deep to smooth over

with yesterday's sun-

shine songs

instead we tally

each falling

                    <leaf>

September

a quiet settles

on parks, playgrounds &

wheat field

where do we purchase

to prolong this summer light

& savor the glorious coat of green

we count the wild sun-

flowers & goldenrods yellowing the trail

& wild teasels, with their empty

seed heads, bowing to the cool wind

we fold sorrows

in deep pockets

as old letters fade

delicate as amber veins

on a fallen maple leaf

the hours go on, un-

shaken by mortal breath,

under the bridge, the river flows un-

tallowed by our thoughts

Autumn Sky

when cold wind settles, blanket

of paraffin wax

on sogging stalks

                             & petals

i throw my words up in the air

& see how some turn to russet,

   gold

& pumpkin yellow

my eyes see                the magic

fleeting sunburst

              magnetic pull of

                                    autumnal light

Food for the soul

red maple leaves

blazing fire & frisson

feed

this simple soul

quiet space is growing

as autumn grips the sky

copper & russet

we fall

on bed warmed by hikes

our footprints invisible

by dying sun

autumn's bed

i palm daffodil bulbs with shrivelled

leaves

it is time:

spading the rain-soaked soil,

i seed golden orbs with roots

on black-thumbed bed,

underneath roses

threading death-stoned husks

night blankets quickly as sunlight

mellows-

i mutter spring's magic

on wooden fence, chickadees are

eavesdropping

Sepia dreams

we are tinged by melancholy

of summer's end

we watch blooms fall, faint

as whisper as wind tarries by

lavender mirrors your face

as tides ebb & flow

autumn approaches with slow

feet, sweeping sepia tones

over green hills,

potted mums & ripe berries

black crows watch on sidelines

as light & clock winds down

we walk on exiled dreams

autumn musings

Who braided the hair of the weeping
willow tree & left a shoe?

Sky is brilliant shade of blue

as maple leaves shimmer in red and gold

The sun moves slow as red & black
woollybear caterpillar on a dead leaf

Why did the crab apple tree bind
itself with sea glass?

The forest floor is soft book
of needled pines and misplaced leaves

A river running low

smelling of dead fish, caught in the tides

Do you know what the earth meditates

upon in autumn?

My skin itches from pollen, tea bags

and unanswered questions

autumn burn

autumn leaves
darkening eyes, wind-curled blades

on pathway, fallen from
maple trees

one by one
i tread with gratefulness

i'll (always) remember how you
torch the sky with brilliant orange hues

your rust-yellow fingers
quivering with fire & sundust

my eyes are blinded
by beauty

the heat of autumn

the music you stir
is knifing sweet as apple cider
you sing the words
with guitar strings cool as rose-ribbed lamp

if only they knew
you are flint that fires me up
striking at core, waking
at first light, your name

on my lips, sudden rainfall
as if world leans away from
scream of darkness
to deep dive of blue kiss -
