one day

the sky will be a mushroom of blue butterfly wings

the ground will be tallowed with yellow pollen

the trees will be needled with green & pines

the streets will be lively with music

the buildings will be festooned with flags & kites

the church bells will peal with gladness

you will sing again with nightingales

dancing in your yellow skirts & teal hat

relish the family meal of beet soup with garlic bread

i will tally the days with light lamp

and jelly beans in my jar

keeping faith

the sun will keel the broken sails

and rise above the long shadows of grief, dust & dire

dappled light,

at the end of this tunnel, awaits you

“Freedom” –
This artwork was made due to the hope, that we have the light at the end and the name of this light – is the Victory. That we will survive and rebuild our country.

5 Pieces on Peace

i.
Peace is a red
lipstick
I slip on
a rainy night

ii.
Peace is a kettle
whistling steam & tea
as snow outside
heavily coats
pine and maple trees

iii.
Peace is a cheap pen
I scribble
on corners of free metro paper
with words
without syntax

iv.
Peace is a wet rug
I clean
the walls
riddled with bullets
the floor
red with broken bones

v.
Peace is a paring knife
cleaving away the skin
and bones of history
only the seeds remain
to be scattered
by the birds

Peace, unembroidered

Your fingers do not know soft leaves
nor supple skein of silkworm
Only the hardness of streets
And hiss of sharp metal blade

How you have forgotten
the years when you were young
Your hands were threading words &
lighting up candles in dark alleys

Your bed is now thin of sorrows
As you struggle to see the serene blue sky
above the ruins of scattered bricks
Suddenly, the air is black smoke of bitterness

As you fight for your breath
Is death the final harbinger of peace?
Whose peace?
Whose death?

You have no answer
As fling yourself to save
a stranger
from burst of gunfire across the street-

You ask me, a poet, to write of peace

Instead
I pour sea salt
on floor, white crystals on black
forming lines, trails, zigzags, u-turns grief
to healing, meticulously hour after hour,
a canvas emerges

Instead
I stitch a patch
with my sisters, aunts, girlfriends
pinning & folding each sides carefully,
delicately threading, day after day
a quilt spreads

Instead
I prepare chicken soup
& fresh salads & bake pies
rinsing & wiping each plate & cup
tending a warm fire, season after season
a hearth nests

Instead
I pot the garden
& sweep neighbor's side of fallen leaves
offering my bus seat to an old man
& smiles to tired woman behind the check-out counter
a bridge shapes

Instead
I gather all:  words & salt grains
& hurl them back to the tides during autumn's eve
perhaps this is how peace finally arrives:
to accept that all returns
to sea

The same tree, the same humanity

Since I live in a multi cultural city in Canada, I am always amaze of how different people are and yet are also alike in a lot of ways. Sure, we originally came from different countries, race and upbringing, and it is reflected in our food and clothing, and also religious faith, if any.  But once you get to know individuals and families, you discover that you share the same values, and appreciation for life and your country.    As a mom, I share the same concerns with any mom with a growing teen daughter.    As a working professional, I share the same health and family concerns like other working women.  In the broader context, I believe in freedom of expression so I sympathize with other people in other countries who want to break away from political tyranny and oppression.   It is heartening to realize that you and other individuals share the same compassion and sadness when others are hurt and suffering, and happiness, when families, teams and countries come together for peace and understanding.

Also, because I believe that despite our external differences, sometime back in ancient times, all of us are connected or related in one way or another.   If we can appreciate this, then perhaps we can be more tolerant of each other's differences and learn to co-exist more peacefully.

Do you agree that at one time, we all came from the same tree?
