summer plans 2024

we are clouds, rain

and storms

rushing through tracks

and roads

aspiring to be strong

as trees and resilient

as lake-

our elders want

us to leap

barriers and buidings

but this sum-

mer, we are flow-

ers,  yellow-gold , slow-

stitching in bee-laden garden

& finding ourselves

it begins with

blue

blue iris

blooming blue iris

in spring, fresh as dew

heradling a season of flowers-

delicate pink hydrangeas,forget-

me-nots, red roses and orange-gold marigolds

lavender and purple, mixed with laughter & cries

of children, stories & jokes on mustard picnic blankets-

my balcony circled by bright yellow zinnas & orange calendulas

let me remember the pattern of joy

& the weaved threads of gladness-

sun-wheel of blessings-

before my memories

sloppily-slip in the

rain

the business of busyness

some of us see you as woman

in flowered hat

cool as a spring blossom

no one can guess that beneath

your walk with an air of elegance

that you are filled with piths of sadness

an emptiness that you cannot bottle

and put a label

so that your therapist can check

its shape

its hues and dunes

its composition

her moon eyeglasses

could not decode where it

started nor prescribe the cure

so you carry a big purse of fullness

and work your hands with busyness

your schedule is so booked

you blank out lunch

you forget to go outside

and inhale the scent of lilacs & tulips-

real flowers, that is

if only your therapist knows

that the only thing that brings you a smile

are the birdsongs

Snapshots of late May (early summer)

morning brings promises of peonies-

sky mirrors an invitation-

tarry with the chores

and fold away the to-do-lists

i pause at half-planting the store-

bought vegetables in container pots-

i listen to birdsongs

& marvel the bees in the garden

the forget-me-nots dally

with blue iris & blossoming rose buds-

the summer air is delicious

as freshly baked sourdough bread-

in a minute, wind blows white seed-

heads of a dying

dandelion, puffy wispy clouds

beyond my grasp-

Briefly, flowers

smudge me with your

                                  light

truffled pink

whorled alabaster

i am newborn

as unrhymed

                                  word

press upon me

courage of mustard seeds

tenacity of  greens

hope of pods & pear

                                 trees

dappled in fading

honeysuckle,

to cradle divinity

       blossoming

in

split-seconds

       falling

                  fallen

                                stars

Helianthus annuus

you shape my face
by light
you spice my lips
of storms

my stem reaches to sky
wrinkling gradient of darkness
to brightest shades

you fill my cheeks
of seeds & quills in
perfect symmetry & florets

in swirling harmony-
a flower, cluster of flowers, crown
of flowering spirals, bouquets of sun-

shine
for you-

autumn's sky

you crease the sky
into periwinkle cornflower

hold the raindrops & dew
scent of apples & pumpkins

into pot of autumn amber,
soup for my cold feet

harbor me here, until
my wings grow steady,

glinting bold black with orange streaks
winking under sun

Forget-me-flowers

We chat over tea and maple biscuits
as carnations & lilies deck the minutes
Your lips are red petals, fawning
While my feet are wings, flitting
happily as moths amongst tulips
You pin a white clover into your hair
And tuck blue violets on your wrists
Overhead, deadly nettle stings my neck
Igniting inside me, darkness, growing fire
Of barberry and yew - I'm sorry I can't offer you
the sweetness of roses, light of sunflowers
Here, take back all the flowers

And forget me, as I disappear, a scud
in the sadness of half-moon, shriveling bud

Haibun: Riverwood

My mind is a blank canvas this afternoon.   No frame, no ceiling, no door.   I gather wildflowers and mushrooms as I hike.   I draw the small birds hiding behind the lush foliage of trees, their bird songs a call to nature.   Here's the baby chipmunk frolicking across the grass.    The water has dried in some parts of the river trails, and a thick wild life has grown, filled with tall wheat stalks and fallen logs.

I cup the sounds of the river, its rushing tides beguiling all visitors by its bank.    The water is clear, brownish under the late afternoon sun.   I hear the wild trout and salmon sashaying their bodies down the river currents, into another river, into another lake.   The path is endless, and though I can't follow them, I thread their goodwill into my journey.  I collect all of spring blessings - sky's quiet hush, wind's renewing spirit, tree's welcoming brushstrokes.     I return home, my mind filled with a cornucopia of fruits, bursting of ripeness.

yellow buds, serrated leaves
yarrow, flax & white clover bloom-

Spring bloom

the way you swell:
a fuller moon, a fragrant rose -
on my hands

the way you tremble:
petalled pink, breathless wind, a dewdrop

language of flowers

Grace @ Everyday Amazing

a seed grows in my mind
     unlike anything i have seen
          mysterious unfolding, a gem-
i take the slender brush,

        paint
the blooms and leaves -
            speak
        the language of flowers -

petals rise, one by one, army
      of pastels & verses -
            rooting, overflowing canvas,
across barren garden

Commentary:   I was specially touched by Tarun's haiku for me ~ Thank you

Calm like a mother
you taught me this enchanting art
my haiku mother.

(I dedicate this haiku to you Grace for you have taught me and at times corrected my haiku. I have never seen you but I know that we have a heart-to-heart bond like a mother and son.)

Flower of love

blue purple flowers grew

in dark room, corner edge

towering ceiling with large heads,
stems slender with lily like blooms

roots clustered to bloom fertility,
strong healthy children,  a view

she believed

until one late summer, during a thunder
storm, she took pen, writing feverishly

faced with a choice, she chose
writing,

over having children

Facts about this flower:
Agapanthus is considered to be both a magical and a medicinal plant, and the plant of fertility and pregnancy. Xhosa women use the roots to make prenatal medicine, and they make a necklace using the roots that they wear as a charm to bring healthy, strong babies. The Zulu use agapanthus to treat heart disease, paralysis, coughs, colds, chest pains and tightness. It is also used with other plants in various medicines taken during pregnancy to ensure healthy children, or to augment or induce labor. It is also used as a love charm and by people afraid of thunderstorms, and to ward off thunder.

Wallpaper

the day looks inviting,
spring bright and blooming
like pink magnolias and maple tree
by blue river way

unblemished by the winter cold,
gnawing the branches until the
leaves close their eyes, and
flutter ash white to the ground

untouched by the stormy wind,
cleaving the roots and tendrils into
barren dust, hibernating in
the womb of mother earth

sleeping deep, oblivious to
screeching of geese, scampering
squirrels, singing of wrens
i hear by the solitary window,

draped by grey curtain clouds,
hovering over the icy landscape
i gaze at thinning paper walls, lost

in magnolia petals and maple leaves

Happy Mother's Day~

Here's to the ones who gave the life
to the souls from the starry skies
here's to the ones that encircle the earth
with the light of their loving eyes.

Here's to the one who never forgets
though I roam the wide world over
whose love can banish all regrets
God's sweetest gift - my mother!

The best Valentine gift to give

Most people would say that flowers are the best Valentine gift to give.

It doesn't matter if they are red roses

or yellow roses

or pink roses.

It  doesn't matter if the flowers

came in a dozen

or just one.  Flowers are great gifts to give anyone.

But for me, a pink home made card with a heart shaped message or baked cookies would be  fine as Valentine gifts as well.

Actually, the last two are the  best Valentine gifts to give.

The extra touch and time devoted to making it are priceless

as they are gifts straight from one's heart.

Happy Valentine's Day to everyone !
