notes for january

 I.

It is not the best weather

Grey skies and winter chill

Dulls my red fancy feathers

Still I go tap dancing, a thrill

II.

Her singing is not too bad

A little off key, she got the keys

Melodic refrains, we are so glad

The choir is humming as bees

III.

It is not the best list process

A seed turns war between want and need

Escalates to what I want to frame

versus what I want to unframe

What I want to remember

versus what I want to forget

On the left side, a grocery list

and a travel wishlist

On the right side, a what-not-to-do list

and a where-not-to-go list

I find myself in a pickle

So, I tie myself to the moon

And rocket launch the first one:

journaling of my day & dreams

a feast (a list)

my nostrils filled with spicy chicken soup, my fingers warmed by buttered bread

a foggy morning, clouds on my head, dewdrops on my feet

an upbeat R&B music, soft humming of appliances in the house

a winter blue plate, oiled by spices, white painted over cracks

the hush of the room, mess of clothes & accessories, smell of soap & towels

bare garden, a pot of spring seeds, soggy splayed summer leaves

an empty page of the book, unanswered questions, hanging conversation

the silence of trees & birds, scattered fallen leaves, broken flower shrubs

slow drip of melting winter ice, fading sunlight on walls, faint sounds of laughter

list of summer's bounty

my lazy left eye draws

the half-moon, a solandis

as i capture the last of summer's bounty-

peachness of ripe oranges

abundance of tomatoes in boxes

fallen rose petals

a susurrus of the cool breeze

slow drawl of honey bees

burble of chickadees on red barbarry shrub

babble of racing black squirrels

bloom of the last yellow bud of cucumber

greeness of rotting crab apples

empyrean of sunlight on fading grass

October pantry

Salt and pepper clouds on pewter sky

Thick marrow, mashed with maple syrup

Pumpkin skinned rhubarb and apple pie

Drizzled curry and thick cream on vegetable soup

Fallowed leaves on twigs twisted in cinnamon bow

Bitter chocolate, cold wine, pints of sorrow on

fallen pine cones

Harvested pots of color:   russet, crimson,

lurid yellow, blazing sepia & burnt amber on shelves

Faded photographs of black crows, echoes

of requiem mass
