Nightscape

Credit:    Kylli Sparre

The waters corral me, quicksand
I am slipping, and not a strand
Nor knot can lift me up, sorrow
Drowns my hands to despair, narrow of light, I am stumped

Then sky opens, danger has passed
Darkness was just a rose with black mask
I cast away this blight, see dawn
Rising sea of lilac green, palming all to glass

Alchemy of night

Photography:   Kylli Sparre

The night descends
like a chorus of black birds-

Their throats silk
of velvet
and fever
of silver and murmurings.

The night seeds
burning tar streaks
on your hand.

What shadows clamor
is sulfur, melting language
to blood-red liquid

Here, then, is the night,
its skin
stripped bare,
on your palm, blue flame.

Horizons

time can grind

    your bones to wood

    your voice to ash

but time can also spool

    your paper cuts to maps

your river of darkness to candle

it depends on the lens wearing our eyes

    a $3.00 subway ticket is

    someone's meal for the day-

when a dress gets rain soaked, it's not tragic

as when a town is mud-swept by monsoon floods-

i peer out from my chair

& draw a ship bobbing upon the waves -

on some days, when i feel i am on that ship

   i remind myself, there's a lighthouse at h

Living in Canada, I feel so blessed & thankful ~  Whatever challenges I have are so small compared to what others have to go through everyday - war, discrimination & lack of freedom ~

A promissory note, pinned on the mirror

Darkness lifts from your shoulders
for once, imagine standing by sea

Soulful as wind rushes
your ears in a stampede of energy & verve

Extending your hands, you float
like lilies on pond, free of tangles & dead weights

Call the night now
and see yourself, a key turning

In a singular fluid motion
         the water darkens with velocity

Spine bending to sky
         you say, take these seeds

Black & curdled with fear
& throw them away to tides & gulls

Moon rises from the sea depths
         resplendent orange, full of light

Shining your face, earnest & ardent
inhale salt beds & sun-ripe meadows

Everywhere you turn is luck
& love rooting & ripening, like it has never left -
