Helianthus annuus
you shape my face
by light
you spice my lips
of storms
my stem reaches to sky
wrinkling gradient of darkness
to brightest shades
you fill my cheeks
of seeds & quills in
perfect symmetry & florets
in swirling harmony-
a flower, cluster of flowers, crown
of flowering spirals, bouquets of sun-
shine
for you-

We did chose the same flower ... what a great coincidence.. I love the way you also stretches toward the sky. The use of the latin name as the title was a great choice.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful Grace. I love sunflowers. We had a few volunteer last year from seed birds dropped from the feeders.
ReplyDeleteOh yes. That whirled symmetry. Lovely.
ReplyDelete"bouquets of sunshine" feels so happy
ReplyDeleteSure a bloom reaching for the sky
ReplyDeleteThe sunflower is symbolic of happiness. I can feel the warmth of the sun.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure of the flower by the title but, I quickly knew once I started reading.
Totally, sunnily, sun flower!
ReplyDeleteI like the flowering spirals and bouquets of sunshine.
ReplyDeletewrinkling gradient of darkness
ReplyDeleteto brightest shades
love this line Grace, I have never seen this flower but your poem paints a gorgeous sight
There is so much to comment on in this beautiful tribute to the sunflower, Grace! I especially love the opening lines and the ‘swirling harmony’.
ReplyDeleteI love sunflowers. I grown them every year and collect the seeds for the birds.
ReplyDeleteSuch a wonderful coincidence that yours and Bjorn's poems to the sunflower were next to each other and seeing where you found the same thing to write about and where the differences. Almost makes me wish the brief had been for everyone to write about the /same/ flower.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the phrase "swirling harmony" This was a treat to read.
ReplyDeleteI love the blooming of flowers in nature and you have penned a poem about one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteIt seems many love the sunflower - hardly surprising. Inspiring.
ReplyDeleteSunflowers make me, and the birds, happy!
ReplyDeleteI love this. You make the sunflower sound like music!
ReplyDeleteI loved this line ...
ReplyDelete'you fill my cheeks
of seeds & quills'
Gorgeous poem Grace 🙂
Beautiful, Grace. Reads like a song.
ReplyDeleteA lovely poem Grace. Especially with spring around the corner. I can't believe I have seen more grass than snow this winter. Every major storm has missed us so far. But here March has always been the month you better watch out...😊
ReplyDeletepeace and love
