Waning crescent moon, Nov. 1

garden bed sighs

of dead petals & fallen leaves

we let the echoes of

departing birds

pingpong our words

as daylight careens into shadows

and veil our tawdry

sunflower-lit crown

let's scarf down

into the autumnal darkness

& slow dance under

second-hand star lights

Posted for dVerse Poets Pub- Quadrille, hosted by Lillian Hallberg.  This is a 44 word post with the chosen word, careen.  Thanks for the visit.

  1. Ah Grace, I adore the scene you've painted here. our "tawdry sunflower-lit crown"....the scarf...a slow dance under second-hand star lights. Sigh.
And I have always been meaning to ask you about the photo you have as your blog header. Did you take it? Is it near you?

  4. I really love the scene you have painted... there is a sadness in autumn that is so very present now at All-saints day.

  7. Very charming and lyrical. I did not find it sad, but rather nostalgic.

  8. "daylight careens" - I love this - daylight is one of the very last things I would think of putting together with the word "careen" ... how beautiful.

  13. You produced another stellar response to a prompt, excellence within every couplet, and a message both clarion and truthful.

  15. Grace, Loved this. Such a fine evocation of light failing and darkness falling even as intimacy "under second-hand lights" brings its own joy!
