Autumn Sky

when cold wind settles, blanket

of paraffin wax

on sogging stalks

                             & petals

i throw my words up in the air

& see how some turn to russet,

   gold

& pumpkin yellow

my eyes see                the magic

fleeting sunburst

              magnetic pull of

                                    autumnal light

YES! I feel this myself, every time we walk along the Charles River these day. Autumn is my favorite season. When nature shows all her glory!

  2. We had this kind of weather today... the cold is really coming, but I fear that the leaves will fall too soon and give way to bare branches instead.

  5. This poem has such a great shape and use of space, Grace, which convey the subject well. Autumn skies are so expressive. I especially love the movement and colours in the lines:
‘i throw my words up in the air
& see how some turn to russet,
    gold
    & pumpkin yellow’.

  6. I also like the idea of throwing words in the air and watch them change colors. You and I both wrote about the magnetism of fall sunlight!

  16. Leaves and words are both so magical, never knowing for sure what will evolve. I liked the "magnetic pull of autumnal light", a lovely way to incorporate the word.

  17. I was pulled in from the start and enjoyed watching your words fall down in "russet, gold and pumpkin yellow." I really enjoyed the visual flow of the words here as well and it sucked me into the end with the "fleeting sunburst" and beautiful image of the Autumn light. Lovely!

  19. I love the phrase 'magnetic pull of/autumnal light' - I think it has that pull because we only get a 'fleeting sunburst' - we have to make the most of it!

How very strong a pull, Grace! Autumn is without a doubt a pull in terms of colours and fine weather - neither hot nor cold!
