Sepia dreams

we are tinged by melancholy

of summer's end

we watch blooms fall, faint

as whisper as wind tarries by

lavender mirrors your face

as tides ebb & flow

autumn approaches with slow

feet, sweeping sepia tones

over green hills,

potted mums & ripe berries

black crows watch on sidelines

as light & clock winds down

we walk on exiled dreams

  1. This week it has felt like the autumn has gained momentum... and I notice it so much more when I work from home. The colors are still green, but the sepia is coming...

  3. WOW! Such beauty in this piece with stunning imagery of Autumn. I especially enjoyed these lines:

    "over green hills,

    potted mums & ripe berries

    black crows watch on sidelines

as light & clock winds down

    we walk on exiled dreams."

Dreams in exile... Mind-blowing itself, and such delicacy in want and longing. Beautiful.

  4. Your words express a longing for a never-ending summer so well. I remember that feeling when I lived in Western New York, with summer's milder than what I now know in Missouri, land of hot, muggy summers.
Now, I may lament summer's end, but only because winter is that much closer. Neither one compares to autumn, which is far too short and has always been my favorite..

  5. As you know, Grace, autumn is my favourite time of the year and I love the way sepia seeps into everything. My favourite lines are:
    ‘as tides ebb & flow
    autumn approaches with slow
    feet, sweeping sepia tones
    over green hills’.
The colours in this poem are so vivid, especially the ’potted mums & ripe berries’.

  7. Sepia. No other shade of any other color would work as well in this magnificent work. Perfect. Thanks, Grace.

  8. I feel some ambivalence here, Grace, which echoes my own for the changing of the season this year. Fall is fine, it's what comes after...

  12. Sepia tones have a richness all their own. I am ready for the summer heat to subside... Very nice descriptions of fall coming and colors fading! Great poem.

  13. autumn approaches with slow
    feet, sweeping sepia tones

It is a transitional time of colors fading in intensity.

    A lovely write.

  14. The bittersweet aura of this doomed love song is both hallowed and harrowing. Such a surficial play of light belying depths surging below.
