cake

i watch rain clouds roil the sky
then knead & butter the soil

birds and small creatures honey-
comb & sword-peck on seeds, grains

it's a feast-
specially the cake's throne topper-

spring maiden rules
dotting dandelions, daffodils, daisies

i soup & eat
slowly, richly

  1. I wish to have such an experience.... May is lovely here, but it's way to dry... love the imagery of a nature as sweet and rich as a cake.

  3. Oh, I like this conceit. I can picture it, almost taste it. All that yellow has a buttery flavour.

  4. The title and lowercase ‘i’ made this quadrille stand out for me, Grace – and then I read the opening lines and gasped! Nature is indeed a rich feast on which I love to sup. I love the alliteration in ‘dotting dandelions, daffodils, daisies’ and the play on dotting the ‘I’s and crossing the ‘ts’, as well as the implied buttery colour, and the way you’ve left the prompt word until last as emphasis.

  5. That first stanza is amazing Grace. I never thought of rain kneading and buttering the soil. Wonderful!

  8. Very clever and apt metaphor; something fresh and new; loved it--and just when I thought there's nothing new under the sun; smile.

  9. Love the idea of the clouds kneading and buttering the soil. The word "sword-peck" is a gem.

  21. ah....so sweet. And I am smiling, thinking of my "spring-form" cake pan in which I make the most delicious almond cheese cake. I shall now always think of my spring-form cake pan in a very different way! :)
