Beginnings

amethyst & ice-crystals
hug my neck, as needles

of pain stakes my chest,
yesterday's grey-

lone blackbird perches on
bare twig

leaps from the darkness &
flies, flashing silver-

my eyes follow,
an apprentice-

then search underneath
frosty dust

my beat-
heat-

beating stone

  1. This is wonderful.. I really wish for some cold wonderful winter instead of this muddy darkness we are left with.

  2. I really felt the chill in your Quadrille, Grace, and love the lone blackbird on bare twig and its silver flash.

  3. I like the cold colours - black, silver, grey - the monochrome of winter. It really adds to the picture you create. And I like that final beating heat.

  5. Amazing sensory images that seem to chill both the bones and the soul. I'm sure you are in a cold zone, if you are experiencing anything like my North Dakota family. A good time to spend with poetry.

  7. Lovely start to 2018 Grace. This poem was as cold as it is here down South - 22F is the high today. Happy New Year to you and blessings to you and those you hold dear.

  11. An intriguing sensory experience...the bitter cold, the darkness, the pain of the needles, the colours of grey. Still there is hope in new beginnings.

  13. What a poem, Grace! And what an image:

    "lone blackbird perches on
    bare twig

    leaps from the darkness &
    flies, flashing silver-"

    and what a finish!

Now this is a poetic leap into 2018! Bravo!

  17. If only...as Bjorn says, it's muddy and slippery rather than hard, frosty and icy. But it's interesting that we both had this powerful image of precious stones or something quite sharp and colourful encircling the neck. Although my peacock feathers are softer. Yours is uncompromising.

  21. I love your eyes as an apprentice. When all around us eyes are so keen to see what they are going to do to better themselves (new year resolutions) here you are, watching the bird. Present and fully alive.
