Dreamers

Time to Bloom by Cheryl Kellar

Cocooned in silk, white spear buds
appear on cherry tree & suddenly spring
is a grain on my palm -

Shape of the long ship
Sleeve of giant canvas
Crest of the uncharted river

Dreams, like flowers do,
standing at the altar
testifying
Yes, I live & breathe in colors -

Red orange, the halo of rising sun
Red velvet, the sugar feast
Red wine, the color of petals
Red henna, the ink of my pen

In my pouch
Pair of birds
Pair of dragons
Pair of sea-horses
Perhaps I am over-dreaming?

Green forest, untouched by roads
Green tea, warming the beggar's cold hands
Ever-green sea, teeming of fish & shells
Emerald gems, innocence of children

Here is my bouquet of songs
Here is my jar of crayons
A wisp
A cloud-string
I close my eyes
& dive into the wind-

mill of the new day-

  9. You succeeded wonderfully, giving us a perfect illustration of what you suggest we might do with the Kellar paintings. I considered choosing an abstract painting too, & I kind of did, but her Clown art really hooked me. Your cue at letting colors cascade, & cajole you was masterful.

  14. There is something so very sensuous and compelling about the writing of vivid colour Grace and you have conveyed this so very well.

  18. I love the play of her colors and how your poem uses them. Spring must be so special for you this year. That's one thing I miss about spending the bulk of winter in the desert--the thrill of spring. But when we return to Reno next week, it will perhaps start all over again.

  20. easy to get lost in this...just as easy as getting lost in dreams. I enjoyed the red and green stanzas....there is no such thing as over-dreaming.

  21. our jar of crayons - that some set away and never return to, perhaps that is the secret to be forever young at heart.

  27. I don't know why, really, but the line 'perhaps I'm over-dreaming' really got to me. It was all beautiful, but that's how I often feel when I try to put together a scribble... Wonderful poem!

  28. "And suddenly spring is a grain is a grain on my palm" - what a lovely promise!

  29. It's amazing how your poem describes the vividness of the painting. I know... "Duh, Barry, that's the whole point," But the abstract imagery married perfectly with what my own eyes tell me about the painting.

    "Dreams, like flowers do,
    standing at the altar
    testifying
Yes, I live & breathe in colors -"

    Yes.YES. That.

  31. In my first house I had two cherry blossom trees outside the window. Every day in spring I woke to a bouquet of blossoms. Your poem is as delicate and colorful as they were. Beautiful.
