when we move

the beat goes off center &

        dives into an exquisite fusion-

high&low, crash&burn as if

time is one long meandering s-e-c-o-n-d

slowly the hardness in our eyes

& troubled words fall on floor

smoke dissolves us

green & light instead of black & weary fighters

we listen as the man grooves his heart

& guts in his music, our sky retracts

as we find our pulse,

     verses bare with excitement

flexes then another Ripple

     moves us like water  filled

with eXpectancy

optimism tears our chest, now a forest

we forget our scars

battles that broke our wings, instead

we run, RuN aWay

     as if nOthing needs mending

                                                          nothing

  5. Love! The power of music! When I did peace movement theatre it really wasn't to convince anyone new but to renew the movement, an ffolk music did that too. How we moved. You capture this here:

"slowly the hardness in our eyes
& troubled words fall on floor
    smoke dissolves us
green & light instead of black & weary fighters"

I think these are essential moments to live as if all were whole, as if the changes had come:
" optimism tears our chest, now a forest
    we forget our scars"

    Brilliant!!

  7. Yes we lose (forget) ourselves when rhythms and beats move us. Could feel this so strongly in your very descriptive beat poem, Grace. Really like this style...gotta try it! Happy New Year, Grace...hope to be visiting more with you this year.

  8. Love these lines:

"we listen as the man grooves his heart

& guts in his music, our sky retracts

    as we find our pulse,"

I think we are all inherently seeking to find our pulse at one time or another in this journey of ours called life. This is truly wonderful!

  9. So much to love about this, but I especially like:

we listen as the man grooves his heart

& guts in his music, our sky retracts

    as we find our pulse,

    verses bare with excitement

  10. I like the rhythm and the movement in this... (something that is foreign to those of us with two left feet) :) music has the touch of the soul in everyone and you captured that touch...

  11. We all must brave those /battles that broke our wings/ & fly/dance on, for the music, the rhythm, the beat, the words will carry us, fuel us, drive us; nice Beat form, and lovely message, Grace.

  22. Movement is life.. and nothing needs mending.. if we keep moving.. I love the melancholy feel and the flow.

  23. If only the Beat poets as a whole could write this well I may have more respect for their verse.

  24. I wish I could hear you read this. I try to imagine the voice when I read poetry and I'd like to know how you would perform this. I wondered too if you were experimenting with same thing I've been trying lately - to get multiple poems in one by weaving them together by alternating lines - so I tried reading this as three different poems and found that it works well that way. In any case, I really enjoyed myself reading this.

  25. Wow, this one reached the core of me. Love the movement in it.

  26. ...this actually goes well with the music Cressida provided as well, at least to me....I'll keep this one in my faves of yours, Grace ;)

  27. As if nothing needs mending. Beautiful writing, flowing and swaying like a slow romantic dance.

  28. I like the feeling of optimism your poem conveys, especially the idea of forgetting our scars.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yep. As Brian says "sense of motion" I love it. I also like what you have done with some of your words here. This poem is something that I could really feel.

  30. There's a teeter totter, an unspoken waltz between the lines. Grace, a poem that dips my heart~ Faithfully Debbie

  31. Very good example of the form - and the ending is beautiful

    ReplyDelete
  32. Yes, the beat goes off center, and we try to get it back or follow its "exquisite fusion" --the unspoken waltz between the lines mentioned above. And the ending is marvelous. Thank you.

  33. A great setting and running away... being free, forgetting the hurts, finally finding that beat- all such aspects are so beautifully expressed in your words.

  34. It seems we are both in sync and tuning in to the music this week. I like how yours leaves a real sense of freedom, of escaping into the beat.

  35. Moving on. Yes, one need not get stuck in an ugly moment. I hear dancing and music in this piece, Grace. :-) Happy weekend.

  36. Moving on - an acceptance and sometimes perhaps a blanket of denial. the perceptional folds here unveil the fine distinction. a very layered piece.

    ReplyDelete
  37. ….and may they keep that pusle alive!

    ReplyDelete
  38. You have achieved an amazing syncopation in these lines. A very avant garde piece.

We run away... as if nothing needs mending...

That has given me something to think about.

  41. Even following our own drum doesn't mean it can't go offbeat. Great piece!

  42. This evokes the smoky image of a dance dive in Greenwich Village in the 60's. Nicely done.

  43. You create such beautiful movement with your words. I could feel myself getting caught up in it.

  47. I love the shape this poem takes and the way you've employed variation in caps and spacing to intensify meaning. I especially enjoy this line among many greats, " time is one long meandering s-e-c-o-n-d"

    Great writing, Grace!!
