Outside my window

The roses are abounding
like tiara of rubies & silk
        umbrellas unfolding in the rain

Do you see each petal glistening
ruffled red, lavish as the sunset
leaning in to inhale the last days of spring

Each neck arching to the clear sky
slender & long as crowned cranes-
bones tender under the prickled flesh

Do you hear the energy & pulse beating
of the seeds in its bosom or curling of roots
in the soil, sturdy even in harsh winter season

Are its memories intact when cut & wrapped
into a bouquet or pressed dry between the pages-
Or does it make new ones, birthing & rising anew-

I marvel at the mystery-
And I am content with not knowing more
As I gaze at their beauty framing my window

  8. smiles...i like the thought that it makes new ones...ones perhaps of the heart that was touched when they were received....so much in a rose, and so many have written of them...but you make it fresh...i like...and i owe you a pic of my roses now...smiles...

  10. Some in tact, some new, some, like pinned butterflies, stopped. But they live here in ruby tiaras and silk umbrellas, ruffles, necks, bones--and a window to look in to another scene! I wonder if the roses have some questions for the narrator here? (I'm not sure you need the last verse ... )

  11. I am missing the roses gene, but I bring them home nonetheless. Nice verse, I just don't get the imagery... no reflection on your work... I'm rose-impaired.

  14. Love this Grace, especially the last stanza.. wondering about the mysteries are all fine... but mysteries are better left untouched.

  31. Thanks for the poet's-eye view of your roses, Grace. I love how you look beneath the surface, but not so close as to destroy all the mystery and wonder of a flowering rose.
