news, gossip, images, messages
like an anxious teenager who doesn't
want to miss the hottest & trendiest topic--

I like LIKE, LIKE all of my FB messages,
One of many 800 million users crowding
DASHBOARD, like a frantic morse code tapping away--

I FAVORITE and tweet, ReTWEET,
in the sea of 50 million messages a day,
faster than a speeding bullet or television news,
folLOW, Follow is a click away--

up to the M1nute stream and tap, TAP,
I have more friends than I ever had
most of whom I have never met (nor will meet)
face to face--

But it's fine really, I get connected with
many people from different countries, it's cool
as long as they are not messaging me about buying their Stuff--

Posted for D'verse Poets Pub - Poetics: Reaching the Masses

In real life, I am  hardly in FB nor twitter nor tumblr, though I have accounts.  While I find all of these social media intriguing, I am careful not to be overwhelmed nor addicted to it.  But these have changed relationships, both personally and professionally.

  4. Grace, what a creative social commentary. I don't tweet or FB. But I do blog and it's time consuming. I tell myself that at least I set some limits. Great poem. I like the circle of no life.

  8. Grace, this is so brilliantly observed and really well written too. I read it out loud - much like the Television poem by Todd Alcott - and it is jut so cool; all the verbal prompts are right there for the performer.

  10. Such truths here, Grace. I think sometimes people's cyber lives (with blogs, twitter, facebook, etc.) seem to take precedence over people's real lives. I do think it is good that people set limits for themselves.

  11. So true Heaven--I think it's the same sort of in-group, out-group popularity contest as ever with humans, just magnified as you say 800 million times, all just playing to our basest insecurities. You portray it well, all the Likes and Follows, and the last image is extremely apropos.

  12. So true... I think society as a whole has become ADHD b/c of all of this at our fingertips.

  13. Yeah takes a ton of work to keep up with them all, as one must like away at there hall. Or so they say, I tend ignore them most times at my bay.

  14. If I had more time, I'd use twitter more..a lot of great information shared that way..Facebook is worth very little of my time, and I haven't really watched TV for decades.

  16. This is terrific...so easy to get carried away with all this social media...I cancelled my FB account two years ago...couldn't stand it really...all that poking about. Anyway love the fast pace, crazy style and tone of this one.

  17. Witty and fun, I agree. It's hard to live with a foot in both worlds and have a stable life. Well done.

  18. I know way too many who pretty much live on these sites... it's such a sad thing that they rely on social media for there happiness.

  20. ...well i had never got so addicted in fb the way i used to be in blogging... very seldom i visit my account on fb probably it was not actually my intention to create one but rather i was forced to have one...yep, one of my prof in college forced her students to have fb account & add her... from there she would update us of the latest assignments, projects, topics for exams, recitations etc etc...ah, she's freak...ha... our world these days are really overoccupied by non sensible things...what more to come tomorrow? and the next days? enjoyed this Grace a lot...really current & calls for open debate...smiles...

  23. great response Grace. I really like this circle of no life image, so very true. I never got on board with Facebook, guess I'm one in 800 million on that front, but never took the time to diagnosis the advantage of using FB over blogging. As for twitter, at first I really liked the novelty of it, and posted quite frequently, but now I primarily use it to promote my own and other's work. Tumblr is fun, but it's just another of so many and yeah, you totally can get caught up in all of these media outlets, where ironically they're termed social, despite robbing any social sense from the people as a whole. Great write and read. Thanks

  26. I think about this phenomenon often. Was thinking yesterday how so many of my "friends" are just black words on a white background.

  33. Hmmmm, I couldn't feel where the sarcasm boundaries were here. But isn't that indeed our lives. Loved the "Circle of Life"
I'd love to see folks do poems on the deceptive lure of poetry blogging.

  34. I probably have an account with every one of those social network sites just to see what they are about. I mainly use facebook but even so, just not into the habit of sharing regularly and I am very particular about who gets to see what. I think they are great social tools but have to be careful not to get caught up and become obsessed with them.

Your poem rightly expresses the frantic activity of social networking in cyberspace. There's so many possibilities, and there's also the feeling that somehow it might all be shallow. Also it's an interesting point in that all this can cause one to be overwhelmed and you might miss out more than if you weren't so constantly connected and updated.

  35. Very true Grace! Lovely poem!
I'm still addicted to facebook, but trying to have control these days.

  36. yes i feel like a hamster in a wheel sometimes. but it does feel like we are connected at a time when broadcast media is having difficulties.
