Wrapped for winter

Grace @ Everyday Amazing

during the night,
you wrapped me
in burlap fabric & staked
my thin bark against the pole

frost has fallen on delicate roots
but surrounded by mulch of bark
and shredded leaves, my seeds
burrow under moss blanket -

inevitable drift of snow,
and silence of birds
& squirrels in the wind chill -
these do not not grieve me anymore -

winter bears its own gifts -
unique points & full of possibilities
& i (am) grateful(ly) turn-

on my left side, i get
ready for long & deep sleep -

Posted for D'verse Poets Pub - Change and Turns - Winter in my part of the world means small & delicate trees being covered by burlap fabric to protect against frost.

my thin bark against the pole...cool phrase grace...they used to do the same in florida when the frosts came, wrap the trees to save the fruit....

  9. Beautiful write, Grace. Better you than me dealing with the cold. Me and old man winter don't get along. That's why I love Texas!

  17. Love the line about being grieved no more. Sometimes the holidays bring out difficult situations and triggers for me. I need to learn to grieve them no more. Sorry if I've inserted my own life into your piece, but it spoke to me, so thank you :)

  34. Your poem reminds me of a children's story by Margaret Wise Brown, "The Little Fir Tree". The book is told from the trees point of view. Lovely...yours and hers!

    & i (am) grateful(ly) turn- "

It is at this point that I knew the identification of I/plant and who takes care of whom in this sleep and grow time. Thank you for this subtle sleeping beauty!

  38. Firstly, sorry i am so late! and happy new year!...this was a beautiful capture ad personification. You give the tree a voice, and describe through it the change of the seasons so well. Quite haunting, but not sad, the poem has this great air of calm and acceptance.
