To the sea

take me to the sea,
lay me down the sands

warmed by salt marsh snails and mottled weeds,
hollowed by the restless crabs and lonely footprints

bring me far where the white gulls fly,
bonded to craggy rocks and cliff edge

then

wash me in plumage grey,
wash me in sun webbed rays,

my wingtips quiver for the sky

Posted for D'verse Poets Pub:   Poetics: Patterns, Pictures and Poems - My writing is still influenced by Manoel de Barros's poetry

Everything from this place has a pact
            with birds.
Here if the horizon reddens a little,
the beetles think it’s a fire.
Where the river starts a fish,
                        river me a thing
River me a frog
River me a tree.

  6. A lovely poem. I love the sea. "wash me in sun webbed rays," that would be very nice indeed.

  8. really nice- and the personification through the eyes of a gull was very well done. Just made me think of sea spray and sea gulls cawing!

  9. This is beautiful. It's always wonderful when we can read another poet that influences us in such a good way. Just finished reading a book called "Steal Like An Artist" that talks about taking things you like from other artists and using them in your own way. Check it out.

  10. Peace behind your words if only those birds didn't drop you know everywhere, would be quite the affair..haha

  11. You paint your picture well, heaven--I can see where you have worked some of the influence of the quoted poem into your own, in the cadence and the way the verbs tumble. I like the second couplet, especially--a grim but extremely accurate analogy, which the poem goes on to transcend.

  17. The poem reflected the image visually as well as in its content. Clever that.

  20. This has that lovely fluidity and passing in and out of the realms of the senses that make life filled with joy. Your words have that sense of oneness with nature and its union with a higher self, loving and caring for all things. The following lines seem to embed the experience in itself:

bring me far where the white gulls fly,
bonded to craggy rocks and cliff edge

Appeal to lover, but also perhaps an appeal to life itself.

  24. Wonderful imagery. I live at the beach and you have painted it as it is. Yours is a peaceful scene. But some days are rocky, high tides, crashing, roaring and spilling up on beach and dunes. Yes, yours is the ocean we love, the unforgettable sounds of birds and surf.

  25. I will think of this when I am next walking the beach at the Oregon coast (which, after this post, makes me think it had better be within the next month!):
hollowed by the restless crabs and lonely footprints

Absolutely beautiful, Grace. Frankly, I thought it superior to de Barros's (and I must admit to never having heard of that poet so thank you for the link).
